Saturday, July 16, 2016

In this blog post I will cover how to import sample database in SQL Server. As sample database I will use Wide World Importers Sample Database for SQL Server 2016 new SQL Server sample database.

So let's begin with this simple tutorial. I assume that you have installed SQL Server 2016 if you are not you can follow my tutorial on how to do that.

First of all we need to download new SQL Server sample database called Wide World Importers
you can find it and download it from GitHub here.

Choose one best for you and click on url... bak file is about 122 MB so depending on your internet speed it can take a while.

After you download it, make sure that you copy your bak file to default SQL Server database Backup directory. It can be found on this location: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup"

Copy .bak file to this folder and follow next steps.

Now you can open SQL Server 2016.

Go to Databases "folder", right click on it and go to Restore Database...

At the next window dialog under Source we need to choose Device, and click on three dot button, after that on Select backup device go to Add choose our WideWorldImporters-Full.bak and than click OK.

These steps you can do with these steps like on this image:

After you click on OK you will get this kind of result:

If everything is done you can click ok OK. After couple of minutes (1-3 minutes) of restoring database (on the top of the window you can track the progress) your new sample database will be successfully restored.

Click OK and after these steps we can check our Databases folder and our new WideWorldImporters sample database will be there.

As we can see this tutorial was successful, and I hope this was helpful for you to get started to learn SQL on this great new sample database.

If this was helpful for you and you know someone that this can be helpful too, please make sure that you share it with your friend or colleague.

Best regards! Almir Vuk
